Maharao Pragmalji II

First Neo-Gothic monument along the western coast
of India and in the heart of Kutch

The Birth of PragMahal

Pragmahal, commissioned by Maharao Shri Pragmalji II in 1865, is a stunning 19th-century palace in Bhuj, Kutch. Designed by Colonel Henry St. Clair Wilkins, the palace blends Neo- Gothic style and carvings influenced from amalgamation of Kutchi & fusion of Greek Folklores. Local Kutchi builders, known as the gaidhars of Kutch, played a key role in its construction, executed this intrinsically carved building by hand and their wages paid in gold. The palace, costing 19 Lakh Koris, was completed in 1869 under the regency of Maharao Shri Pragmalji’s son, and heir apparent young Khengarji III who was only 12 years old.

MaharaoShri Pragmalji II, a progressive ruler from the Jadeja dynasty, reigned from 1860 until his death in 1875. His reign was marked by modernization, including the reconstruction of forts in Mandvi and Mundra, the embankment of Hamirsar Lake, and the establishment of state- funded education. He founded Alfred High School, the first high school in Kutch, in 1870. His administration also saw the formation of the Port Police, forest officers, and the first Bhuj Municipality.

Pragmahal, a symbol of Maharao shri Pragmalji II’s vision, stands as a tribute to his commitment to Kutch’s development and modernization, blending ambition with architectural grandeur.

A Glorious Journey Through Time

A true architectural marvel of the Western part of India, Pragmahal stands proudly in the heart of Bhuj, a city steeped in heritage, culture, and history. As you step inside this 19th-century palace, the whispers of a bygone era come alive, with every stone and pillar echoing tales of grandeur and royal splendor.

Pragmahal’s creation was a collaborative effort between English engineer and the local gaidhars of Kutch—an expert builder community known for their architectural prowess. Together, they crafted this masterpiece, with wages paid in gold coins—a reflection of the importance and grandeur attached to the project. Although Maharao shri Pragmalji II passed away in 1875, the palace’s construction continued under his son, young Khengarji III, and was completed in 1879 at an enormous cost of 19 Lakh Koris. The result is a grand palace that exudes royal charm and splendor, standing tall amidst the historical landscape of Bhuj.
